As I reflect on my nearly 60-year career in law, one of the aspects I'm most proud of is the opportunity I have had to mentor and train 28 lawyers over the years. It has been incredibly rewarding to see these individuals grow and develop, many of them now occupying senior positions in major international law firms, investment banks, and the business world.
The joy of mentorship lies not just in imparting knowledge, but in instilling the highestprofessional ethical and moral standards that are crucial in our field. I am pleased to say thatthere has never been any criticism of any of these lawyers professionally. They continue to uphold the values and principles they learned during our time together.
Just in the past two years, two of my colleagues have qualified, and another is on the brink of qualification. This continuous cycle of learning and growth keeps me energized and connected to the evolving landscape of law.
One story that particularly stands out is that of Veronika, who joined my team as a receptionist at the age of 18. She expressed her desire to become a lawyer, and I must admit, I was skeptical at first. However, her determination and hard work proved me wrong. Eight years later, while still working with me, she qualified and has since become one of the best commercial lawyers I know. Today, she practices as in-house counsel for a major life science company.
Veronika's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of supportive mentorship. It reminds me that our role as seasoned professionals extends beyond our immediate work – we have the power to shape the future of our profession by nurturing the talent around us.
As I continue in my role at Pantheon International Advisors Limited, I carry these experiences with me. They inform my approach to providing strategic development advice and supporting the growth of emerging companies. After all, at the heart of every successful business are the dedicated professionals who drive it forward.
To my fellow legal professionals, I encourage you to embrace the role of mentor. The rewards are immeasurable, both for your mentees and for yourself. And to those starting out in their legal careers, remember that with determination and the right guidance, you can achieve great things – just like Veronika.
